One of the most common mistakes people make with their life insurance is not purchasing enough coverage. Many people underestimate their life insurance needs and end up with inadequate coverage that cannot provide sufficient financial protection for their loved ones in case of an unexpected event.

To avoid this mistake, it is important to calculate your life insurance needs based on your financial obligations, such as mortgage payments, outstanding debts, and the future needs of your dependents. A good rule of thumb is to purchase life insurance coverage that is at least 10 times your annual income.

Many employers offer group life insurance as part of their employee benefits package. While this can be a convenient way to obtain life insurance coverage, it may not be enough to provide sufficient financial protection for your loved ones in case of an unexpected event.

Group life insurance typically provides coverage that is equal to one to two times your annual salary, which may not be enough to cover all of your financial obligations. In addition, group life insurance coverage typically ends when you leave your employer, which can leave you without coverage when you need it most.

To avoid this mistake, it is important to consider purchasing an individual life insurance policy in addition to any group life insurance coverage you may have. This can provide additional financial protection for your loved ones and ensure that you have coverage in case you leave your employer.

Once the policyholder designates someone as an irrevocable beneficiary, written consent from the beneficiary is required to make any changes. This type of beneficiary designation is often used in situations where the policyholder wants to ensure the preservation of the death benefit for a specific purpose, such as providing for a disabled family member or protecting assets from creditors.
With a per stirpes beneficiary election, the death benefit is distributed by branch or lineage. In this case, if one of the primary beneficiaries cannot receive their share, their portion is passed down to their own descendants (such as children or grandchildren). This method allows for the continuation of the deceased beneficiary’s share within their own family line.

Continuing with the previous example, suppose the same policyholder names their three children as primary beneficiaries with a per stirpes election. If one child predeceases the policyholder, their share would pass down to their own children (the policyholder’s grandchildren) instead of being divided equally among the surviving children. This ensures that the deceased child’s share stays within their branch of the family.

In summary, both pro-rata and per stirpes beneficiary elections help determine the distribution of the death benefit when a primary beneficiary is unable to receive their share. They differ in how the remaining beneficiaries or descendants receive the portion. Pro-rata distributes equally among surviving primary beneficiaries. While per stirpes passes the share down to the deceased beneficiary’s own descendants. Understanding these distinctions can help you make informed decisions when designating beneficiaries in your life insurance policy.

Proper beneficiary designations can help your loved ones avoid the probate process and expedite the claims process. When a life insurance policy has valid and up-to-date beneficiary designations, the death benefits can be paid directly to the designated beneficiaries, bypassing probate court. This is important because the probate process can be quite time consuming. Sometimes taking over a year for assets to be distributed to your heirs. Not only that, but any assets that are part of your probate are also subject to creditor claims. One of life insurance’s most powerful benefits is its ability to avoid probate. Consequently, it is every beneficiary’s interest to protect that feature. Having life insurance with no beneficiary named will subject the proceeds to probate and that valuable benefit will be lost. It’s almost never advisable to intentionally name your estate as your life insurance beneficiary.

Sound beneficiary planning allows for a faster and more efficient distribution of the proceeds. Thus, providing much-needed financial support during a challenging time.

To avoid probate and expedite the claims process:

Ensure your beneficiary designations are valid and comply with the requirements of your life insurance policy.

Keep your beneficiary designations updated to reflect any changes in your personal circumstances, such as marriage, divorce, or the birth of children.

Communicate with your beneficiaries and inform them of the existence and details of your life insurance policy, including the policy number and the contact information of the insurance company.

Given that minors cannot directly manage substantial sums of money, it’s essential to appoint a trustworthy adult as a trustee or guardian to oversee the funds until your children reach the age of majority. This individual should be someone you trust implicitly and who shares your values and financial principles. By involving a trustee or guardian, you ensure that the funds are managed responsibly and utilized for the children’s best interests.

Creating a trust can also be an effective strategy when naming minor children as beneficiaries of a life insurance policy. A trust acts as a legal vehicle to manage and distribute the insurance proceeds according to your specific instructions. Consulting with a professional estate planner or attorney can help you navigate the process of setting up a trust.

However, some group policies offer the option to convert to an individual policy, albeit at a potentially higher cost.

Lack of control. With group coverage, it is the employer who owns the policy not you. They decide who’s eligible, what the coverage limits are, and which carrier will provide the coverage. The employer can make unilateral changes to these at any time.

Lower death benefits. Group policies may not offer as much coverage as you need. Commonly group life coverage may have a maximum amount of available coverage that isn’t enough to meet your needs, even with proof of good health.

It can go up. Most group health plans are priced by your age at the beginning of each plan year. This means the cost of your group coverage will increase as you get older. Most policies have age “tiers’, where the premium are level until you reach the next age bracket.

Coverage reductions at age 65. If you are relying on your group coverage as you age, keep in mind most group life policies will reduce your benefit amount when you reach a certain age, 65 for example. There will likely be another reduction to 50% at some point after that, if you are still working.

Individually owned life insurance, as the name implies, is a policy you purchase independently. Here are some key points to consider:

Coverage and cost. Individual term life policies provides coverage for a specific period of time or your entire life, depending on the type of coverage you choose. Premiums for policies are typically higher than those for group term life because they are based on individual factors such as your age at the time of application, overall health, and lifestyle choices.

Customization. One advantage of individual life insurance is the flexibility you have in customizing your policy to address your specific needs. You have the flexibility to choose the amount of coverage, duration of the rate guarantee, and additional riders or benefits you may need.

Portability. Unlike group term life, you own the policy. Your coverage is not predicated on you continuing to work for the same employer. So, it remains in force regardless of changes in employment or worker status. This gives you peace of mind in knowing your coverage is not at risk due to planned or unplanned changes in employment.

We’re going to share an industry secret with you. A secret most life insurance companies would really prefer that people not be aware of. That secret of course is that when you ask for a price quote, the number you get is non-binding. What does that mean? It means that when you ask an insurance agent how much a life insurance policy is going to cost; the insurer doesn’t have to honor preliminary life insurance quotes. Once your application is submitted and they thoroughly investigate your medical records, and determine what health rating you qualify for, then and only then will they give you a genuine offer.

This is an important point. Because this is how life insurance companies market their products. They know that most people, and agents as well, will only comparison shop for the lowest of all possible rates. They assume that life insurance policies are all just the same generic product with no difference between what each company is offering. That is not really true. But to muddy the waters even more, there is no standardization for life insurance health ratings. Each carrier creates their own rating system, and there are no uniform qualifications between each insurer.

The underwriter just goes by your answers on the application and verifies them with your health records stored on a central database (everyone has one whether you’re aware of it or not).

Plus, there is no Attending Physician Statement (APS) that needs to be ordered, which means the underwriting on your application can be completed in as few as a few minutes.
Life insurance falls into two basic categories of coverage: permanent and term. Term insurance is just as it sounds; it’s designed to cover you for a predetermined period of time. Permanent life insurance is designed to last your entire lifetime. Another way to think about it is term insurance is there to protect your family if you pass away prematurely. where permanent insurance is designed to be there whenever you pass away no matter your age.

Term insurance is temporary life insurance. Although most policies will state that coverage is renewable past the guarantee period, once that expires, your premiums will increase dramatically. Then they continue to get increasingly more expensive each following year. That’s why term insurance has a claim rate of less than 2%. Once its term is over, nobody can afford to keep it. If you outlive your term insurance, but still need the coverage, you will have to reapply for a new policy. That means that you will have to medically qualify for the new coverage. So, if you develop any health issues since you took out your last policy, you might have to pay a higher rate based on that or worse, not qualify at all. Also, at that point, you will be much older. So, the new premium which will be mostly based on your age, will be higher as well.

Anyone who other people depend on for their well-being and/or financial security needs life insurance. This is to protect them from the loss of your financial support.

Homeowners

If you own a house financed with a mortgage, life insurance can mean the difference your family being able to stay in the family home or being forced to sell it should you pass away.

Breadwinners

Most households now need two incomes just to make ends meet. What would happen if you or your spouse were to unexpectedly die? Would the income of whoever is left to carry on be enough to support their current lifestyle?

Stay-At-Home Parents

This is probably one of the more overlooked aspects when figuring out your life insurance needs. A stay-at-home parent may not have any reportable income. But what they do is just as important. It allows the primary breadwinner to be just that, the breadwinner. Replacing what they do, is either going to take away from your earnings ability or you’ll have to pay someone else to cover your childcare duties. Life insurance for stay-at-home parents is just as important as having it for the primary breadwinner.

Parents

Raising a family carries with it tremendous responsibilities. Imagine the burden it places on a surviving spouse to have to keep up with the monthly household bills on their salary alone, as well as having to raise your children as a single parent. Think about how your family’s lives would change if your income and support suddenly went away. It’s never pleasant to think about these things. But it’s a smart idea to have a plan in place for this possibility using life insurance.

Individuals with Debt

If you have a lot of debt, consider taking out at least enough life insurance to cover it. Even if you are single and have no children. This is especially true if someone has co-signed for any of your loans. Private student loans are not forgiven on death the way Federal student loans are. So creditors can file a claim against any assets in their estate, or the co-signor for the full amount. In the case of Federal Parent PLUS loans, the good news is that the loan is cancelled. However, here’s the bad news. Since the parent who co-signed the loan also benefits from this forgiven loan, the IRS considers this a taxable event. So, the parent will receive a 1099-C from Sallie Mae and will have to pay taxes on the total amount. Considering the high cost of a college education, it’s very common to see student loans in excess of $100,000. The income taxes on a loan forgiveness of this size will be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Business Partners

This an often overlooked aspect of owning a business when you have a business partner, or partners. Who inherits that ownership interest in the business should your partner pass

Once you know how much you need the next question is; what is the best type of life insurance?

Life Insurance falls into two basic categories – term and permanent life insurance. Term life insurance is structured so that it’s temporary in nature. Although it’s usually renewable until around age 95, the premiums go up each policy anniversary. The premium increases are small in your early years. But they become significant when you reach age 55, and substantial above age 65. At some point the premium increases become so drastic the policyholder cancels the policy. For that reason, more than 98% of all term life policies lapse before paying a claim.

Term Life Insurance

Most term life insurance policies now are sold as “Guaranteed Level Term”. Common guarantee periods usually come in 10, 15, 20, and 30 year increments. What that means is that for the specified guarantee period, the premiums won’t change. However, on the anniversary date that the guarantee period expires, the premiums escalate drastically. At that point the policy reverts back to a 1-year renewable term where the premiums go back to increasing each year.

Permanent Life Insurance

There are two kinds of life insurance contracts that fall under the permanent life insurance category: Universal life and whole life. Whole life is designed to last your entire life without any change in premiums as you get older. It also builds cash value that can accessed through policy loans. Plus in case the policy is no longer needed, it can be surrendered (cashed in). Owners of whole life policies are guaranteed a minimum level of cash value buildup. What’s more, the policy earnings is not tied to the stock market.

Universal life is also designed to be lifelong coverage. However it may not come with the guarantees that its whole life counterpart does. Consequently, premiums for universal life policies are usually significantly less than those for whole life.

There is also a type of policy that has features of both term insurance and whole life. These life insurance policies are known as guaranteed universal life insurance, GUL for short. These policies are generally not designed to build cash value, but are kept in force by their no-lapse guarantee. But, like whole life policies, they can be guaranteed last your lifetime. If you are looking for life insurance that will last your lifetime, won’t ever increase in cost, won’t ever reduce in coverage, is more affordable than whole life, but cash value is not a concern, a GUL policy may be a viable solution.

It is important to understand the different types of life insurance policies available. There are two main types of life insurance: term life insurance and permanent life insurance. Term life insurance provides coverage for a specific period of time, typically 10, 20, or 30 years. This type of policy tends to be more affordable than permanent life insurance because it has a set expiration date and does not accumulate cash value. Permanent life insurance, on the other hand, provides coverage for the entire lifetime of the insured and has the potential to accumulate cash value over time. However, it tends to be more expensive than term life insurance.

The cost of life insurance premiums is based on several factors, including the age, health, and lifestyle of the insured. Younger and healthier individuals generally pay lower premiums than older or less healthy individuals. Additionally, certain lifestyle factors such as smoking, heavy drinking, or participation in risky hobbies or occupations can also impact the cost of premiums.

It is also important to consider the amount of coverage you need when selecting a life insurance policy. The amount of coverage required can vary depending on factors such as your income, debts, and number of dependents. While it may be tempting to opt for a lower coverage amount to save on premiums, it is important to ensure that your loved ones will be adequately protected financially in the event of your unexpected death.

Many people believe that life insurance is too expensive to afford. Only 24% of people correctly estimate the actual cost of a policy. The reality is that the cost of life insurance varies depending on a variety of factors, including age, health, and lifestyle. According to a survey conducted by LIMRA, the average cost of life insurance for a healthy 30-year-old is only $13.44 a month for a 20-year term policy with a $250,000 death benefit. This is less than the cost of a daily cup of coffee! More than half of Gen Z adults (55%) and 38% of Millennials thought it would be more than $80 a month – overestimating the cost by more than 500%.

Putting off buying life insurance can be a costly mistake. Many people assume that life insurance is an unnecessary expense or something they can wait to purchase later in life. However, the truth is that delaying the purchase of life insurance can have serious financial consequences for you and your loved ones.

Firstly, the cost of life insurance premiums generally increases with age. This means that the longer you wait to purchase life insurance, the more expensive it will be. Additionally, as you age, your health may decline, which can further increase the cost of premiums or even make you completely ineligible for coverage altogether. By delaying buying life insurance, you may be missing out on the opportunity to secure coverage at a more affordable rate.

Furthermore, putting off buying life insurance can leave your loved ones financially vulnerable in the event of your unexpected death. Without life insurance, your family may struggle to cover the costs of your funeral, outstanding debts, or other expenses. This can create a significant financial burden for your loved ones during an already difficult time.

Delaying the purchase of life insurance can also have long-term financial consequences. If you were to pass away without life insurance, your family may be forced to sell assets or dip into savings in order to cover expenses. This can impact their ability to save for their own future goals, such as retirement or education expenses.

In addition to the financial consequences of delaying the purchase of life insurance, there are also emotional implications. Without life insurance, you may worry about the financial security of your loved ones if something were to happen to you. This can create a great deal of stress and anxiety for both you and your family.

While the cost of life insurance may seem like an unnecessary expense, putting off the purchase of life insurance can have serious financial and emotional consequences. By delaying the purchase of life insurance, you risk missing out on the opportunity to secure coverage at an affordable rate, leaving your loved ones financially vulnerable, and creating long-term financial implications. It is important to prioritize the purchase of life insurance to provide peace of mind for yourself and your loved ones.

Life insurance is a financial product that may be crucial in providing for your loved ones after your death. It provides a sum of money, also known as a death benefit, to a designated beneficiary. This is to help cover expenses like funeral costs and outstanding debts, and provide financial support for dependents. There are many reasons why someone may need protection. Consequentely, understanding these reasons can help you determine if life insurance is the right choice for you.

One of the most important reasons for someone to consider buying a policy is to provide for their dependents. If you are the primary breadwinner for your family, your death could have a significant financial impact on your loved ones. The death benefit will provide a safety net for your dependents, Thus ensuring that they have the financial support they need to cover living expenses, education, and other necessities. This is particularly important for families with young children who rely on you for their financial support.

Another reason why someone may need coverage is to help pay off outstanding debts and other expenses. When a person dies, their debts do not disappear. If you have a mortgage, car loan, or other debts, those debts will need to be paid off by someone. The death benefit from a life insurance policy can be used to cover these expenses, helping to relieve some of the financial burden on your loved ones. This can be especially important if you have co-signed loans. Your spouse may not be able to cover these expenses on their own.

Life insurance can also be an important tool for estate planning. If you have a large estate or valuable assets that you want to pass on to your loved ones, the death benefit can help ensure that your heirs receive these assets without having to sell them to cover estate taxes or other expenses. By using life insurance to cover these costs, your estate can remain intact. Your heirs can then inherit your assets without having to worry about financial difficulties.

Finally, life insurance can provide peace of mind to the policyholder and their loved ones. Knowing that there is a financial safety net in place can help alleviate some of the stress and anxiety that comes with the uncertainty of the future. For many people, this peace of mind can be invaluable and can help them focus on the things that matter most. In other words, spending time with their loved ones and enjoying life to the fullest.

Ultimately, life insurance can provide important financial protection for your loved ones in the event of your death. It can help cover expenses like funeral costs and outstanding debts, provide for your dependents, and assist in estate planning. Additionally, owning a policy can provide peace of mind and alleviate some of the stress and anxiety that comes with the uncertainty of the future. Yes, it may be difficult to think about the possibility of your own death. But taking the time to consider the benefits of insurance can be an important step towards protecting your family. If you think the cost of getting insured is too much, please check out our post “Can I Afford Life Insurance?”
